12 ways an entrepreneurship workshop host makes business workshops more engaging and interactive

Entrepreneurship is a vital part of any thriving economy, and the skills required for entrepreneurship are numerous. Pitching, sales and storytelling for marketing are just a few of the many skills required to become a successful entrepreneur. A great way to learn these skills is through entrepreneurship workshops. Entrepreneurship workshops are a fantastic way to engage founders and teach them the skills they need to succeed. In this blog post, we will discuss eight ways to host engaging enterprise workshops teaching entrepreneurs skills such as pitching, sales, and marketing. In this blog, you can learn what to look for in an excellent entrepreneurship workshop facilitator and gain some tips to improve your reviews as an online business workshop host.

  1. Make it interactive

One of the most important things to keep in mind when hosting an enterprise workshop is to make it interactive. It is essential to keep your audience engaged throughout the workshop, so they absorb as much information as possible. This can be achieved through quizzes, challenges, discussions, games and more. The best way this is to encourage participation from the attendees. Ask them questions and get them involved in activities or exercises that will help them understand the skills being taught.

For example, during a ‘how to find your business idea workshop’ you could have attendees break into small groups and create a pitch for a fictional solution to a given problem. Encourage them to use what they've learned in the workshop to create an innovative solution. Afterwards, have them present their ideas to the group and give feedback on each other's work. In the best entrepreneurship workshops attendees will learn from each other and practice the skills they've learned.

Games can be a great way to make entrepreneurship learning for adults more interactive and engaging. Games can provide a sense of competition and challenge, which can motivate the audience to participate and learn more actively. They can also provide instant feedback and reinforcement, which can help participants learn and retain information more effectively. Games can also be used to simulate real-world scenarios, allowing entrepreneurs attending the workshop to practice and apply new skills in a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, games can be designed to be fun and entertaining, which can make the learning experience more enjoyable. By incorporating games into online learning, educators can create a more dynamic and interactive learning experience that can help entrepreneurs achieve their learning goals more effectively.

2. Start with a bang

If this is an online workshop, try to avoid the awkwardness of having people slowly enter the room for over 10 minutes and make small talk and instead start the business workshop band on the start time. As an interactive entrepreneurship host, I will have a welcome slide up to welcome participants into the room, but will only start at the exact time with a big welcome. The big enthusiastic welcome will soon be followed by an icebreaker in the form of an engaging question while we wait for everyone to join.

3. Start with an engaging question

Everyone arrives at workshops at different times. Starting an entrepreneurship workshop with an interesting question can be a great way to engage participants and set the tone for the workshop. By posing a thought-provoking question that relates to the topic of the workshop, facilitators can capture the attention of participants and stimulate their curiosity and critical thinking skills. This can create a sense of intrigue and anticipation among participants, making them more receptive to the content and activities that follow.

In addition to engaging participants, starting with a question can help facilitators to understand the needs and perspectives of their audience. By asking a question that encourages participants to share their experiences, insights, and challenges, facilitators can gain valuable information that can inform the content and approach of the workshop. This can help to tailor the workshop to the specific needs and interests of the participants, making it more relevant and valuable for them.

Furthermore, starting with a question can create a sense of dialogue and collaboration among participants. By encouraging participants to share their ideas and perspectives, facilitators can foster a sense of community and shared learning. This can help to build relationships among participants, which can be invaluable for networking and support as they pursue their entrepreneurial goals.

As an entrepreneurship workshop facilitator my top advice is to ask a question which is easy to answer and that the participant already knows the answer to or can find it easily. The point of the icebreaker is to involve engagement so we don’t want to put up a big barrier to engagement by asking participants to post their life stories. Sometimes questions unrelated to the workshop get people engaging such as ‘Are dogs or cats the superior pet?’ This is a question everyone can contribute to, with storytelling and debate being encouraged. The answer is cats of course! If you are looking for an icebreaker question for an entrepreneurship workshop that is related to the material you could ask them to post an emoji of how they feel about the topic or to rate their knowledge and experience in the area of question out of 10.

4. Create a relaxed atmosphere

Creating a relaxed atmosphere is another critical factor in hosting an engaging enterprise workshop. Entrepreneurship can be a stressful and challenging career path, and workshops should be a place where attendees can unwind and learn without feeling overwhelmed. If your business workshop lasts longer than 2 hours then a 2-10 minute break is recommended.

As a workshop facilitator, you should focus on creating a welcoming environment for attendees. This can be achieved by providing refreshments or snacks during breaks, using comfortable chairs or furniture, and keeping the tone of the workshop light and conversational.

If you are hosting an online workshop, ensure that the virtual space is easy to navigate and has clear audio and video quality. Create a safe space where people feel free to discuss their challenges in confidence.

5. Incorporate case studies

Incorporating case studies into your enterprise workshop is an excellent way to provide real-world examples of the skills you are teaching and inspire the students. Case studies are an effective way to illustrate how a particular skill can be applied in a real-world setting. This can help attendees see the practical applications of what they are learning and motivate them to implement these skills in their businesses.

When choosing case studies, ensure that they are relevant to the attendees' industries or interests. Choosing entrepreneurial case studies that are relatable and sharing the progress in the form of a story is a great way to make the teachings more memorable. If you can select a story to share where the entrepreneur started in a very similar situation to where the audience is today can be motivational. Alternatively, selecting a case study where innovation or strategic thinking was used can encourage entrepreneurs to think outside the box. This will help attendees relate to the case studies and see how the skills being taught can be applied to their businesses. Additionally, consider using case studies of successful entrepreneurs who have implemented the skills being taught in the workshop. This can be a great source of inspiration for attendees.

6. Use visual aids

Visual aids are an excellent way to enhance the learning experience for attendees. They can help break up long presentations or lectures, make complex information more accessible, and keep attendees engaged throughout the workshop.

When using visual aids, ensure that they are easy to read and understand. Avoid using too much text, and instead, focus on using images or diagrams that illustrate the key points you are trying to make. This can help attendees retain the information being presented and make it easier to recall later.

Additionally, consider using interactive visual aids, such as videos or animations. These can be especially effective when teaching skills such as sales or marketing, where visual examples can help attendees understand concepts better.

7. Use your (the entrepreneurship workshop host’s) personal experience

Real-life examples help participants understand the practical applications of the concepts they are learning. As an entrepreneurship workshop facilitator, I use my own experiences or those of my clients to illustrate the concepts being taught. This is achieved through storytelling. This makes the workshop more relatable and helps participants understand how they can apply what they have learned in their businesses. Additionally, using case studies from successful entrepreneurs who appear as guests in the workshop can be an excellent way to inspire participants and show them what is possible as the audience can ask questions.

8. Keep it focused

It's easy for a workshop to lose focus and become too broad. This can overwhelm participants and dilute the effectiveness of the workshop. As an expert workshop facilitator for entrepreneurship and business, my experience shows that keeping the workshop focused is crucial. In a 2-hour marketing workshop it is impossible to cover every marketing strategy and most entrepreneurs will be aware of the different types. Focusing instead on specific strategies that have worked for myself or other entrepreneurs gives the participants practical strategies to try themselves. I focus on specific skills or topics that are relevant to the participants and their businesses. This ensures that the workshop is more effective in meeting its objectives.

9. Select an energetic presenter

Having an energetic presenter can make a significant difference in the engagement level of online education. Energetic presenters can help capture and maintain the attention of learners, making the experience more enjoyable and memorable. They can use their energy to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment, encouraging learners to participate actively in the learning process. Additionally, energetic workshop presenters can create a sense of enthusiasm and excitement around the topic being presented, which can motivate learners to engage more deeply with the content. They can use their energy to convey complex ideas and concepts clearly and engagingly, making it easier for learners to understand and apply the information being presented. For heavy information topics such as storytelling for marketing, pitching or sales, having an energetic presenter can help emphasize the important parts to make note of and keep everyone engaged. Overall, having an energetic workshop host can be a powerful tool for creating an engaging and effective entrepreneurship workshop.

10. Educate entrepreneurs using storytelling techniques

Storytelling can be a powerful tool for educating entrepreneurs because it can help to communicate complex concepts and ideas in a way that is relatable and memorable. By using stories to illustrate key principles and insights, educators can help entrepreneurs to understand and remember the information being presented. Additionally, storytelling can help to make the learning experience more engaging and enjoyable for entrepreneurs, creating a sense of connection and empathy with the material.

Furthermore, storytelling can be an effective way to convey the real-world experiences and challenges of entrepreneurship. By sharing stories of successful entrepreneurs and the obstacles they faced along the way, educators can provide entrepreneurs with valuable insights and inspiration for their own entrepreneurial journeys. This can help to build confidence and resilience among entrepreneurs, as well as a sense of community and shared experience.

In addition to these benefits, storytelling can help entrepreneurs to develop their communication skills, which are essential for success in entrepreneurship. By learning how to tell compelling stories about their businesses and products, entrepreneurs can better communicate their value proposition to customers, investors, and other stakeholders. This can help to build credibility and trust, as well as attract the resources and support needed for growth and success.

11. Give entrepreneurs a challenge that puts them out of their comfort zone

Giving entrepreneurs a challenge that puts them out of their comfort zone can be a great way to end an entrepreneurial workshop because it can help them apply the skills and knowledge they have learned in a real-world setting. Challenging entrepreneurs to step outside of their comfort zone can help them develop resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in entrepreneurship. By giving them a challenge that requires them to take risks and innovate, entrepreneurs can learn how to overcome obstacles and think outside the box, which are essential skills in entrepreneurship.

Additionally, a challenge can create a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among workshop participants, allowing them to work together to achieve a common goal. This can help entrepreneurs build a network of support and encouragement, which can be invaluable as they pursue their entrepreneurial goals.

Finally, a challenge can provide a sense of closure and accomplishment to the workshop experience. By completing a challenging task or project, entrepreneurs can feel a sense of pride and achievement, which can be a powerful motivator as they continue to develop and grow their businesses.

12. Follow up after the workshop

Finally, one of the most crucial steps in hosting an engaging enterprise workshop is to follow up with attendees after the event. This can help reinforce the skills they've learned and provide additional resources.
